How do you beat back fear to win career success?

You may say that you don’t feel fear. But deep down, we all sometimes experience fear in some form at work.

You feel it when things are uncertain, when stakes are high, when things aren’t going well, when change explodes or when you’re not clear on what you need to do or how to do it.

You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t feel fear sometimes. The challenge is: You don’t want on-the-job fear to derail your work performance and career path.

In my readings, I’ve come across acronyms using the word “fear.” False Evidence Appearing Real.

Forget Everything and Run.

When fear comes up, how do you rise above it to take charge and perform your best?

Things That Go Bump In Our Heads

Performance expert and author Brendon Bouchard teaches that underlying fear are three types of pain we want to avoid. Each shows up with its own nagging, disempowering language.

This language fuels fear, not success.

  • First there’s Loss Pain — the fear we’re going to lose something or have to give something up. Its voice asks: What if something bad happens?
  • Next there’s Process Pain — the fear that we don’t know to deal with this situation or that it’s going to be hard. Its voice insists: I don’t know how to do it.
  • Then there’s Outcome Pain — the deep-down fear that no matter how great effort, we’re still going to fail. Its voice complains: Why can’t I succeed?
  • These fears – and their voices — keep us stuck in our heads.

They throw us into a downward spiral, an emotional vortex.

From Stress to Success

How can we get out of the vortex to get the work success we want?

Bouchard suggests reframing the situation by asking three new questions:

  • When you fear loss, the new question to ask is: What could I gain from this situation? This refocuses you on Opportunity.
  • When you fear process, the new question to ask is: What can I learn? This refocuses you on Mastery.
  • When you fear outcome, the new question to ask is: What might be? This refocuses you on Possibility.

Opportunity. Mastery.  Possibility.

These reframes help us avoid derailing. They help us to rise to make fear work for us and perform at our best.
